SOPPA: Student Data Privacy

At Raccoon Grade School, we believe that protecting the privacy of our students' data is a serious responsibility. We are committed to complying with the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA), which went into effect on July 1, 2021.

What is SOPPA?

SOPPA is a law that requires school districts to establish data privacy contracts with vendors who handle student data. This data may include information such as names, birthdates, grade levels, and more. SOPPA ensures that vendors safeguard this information to prevent it from being sold or shared with unauthorized parties.

Under SOPPA, vendors (companies) must enter into Data Privacy Agreements (DPAs) with each school district. These agreements outline:

● What data is collected and stored

● How the data is protected

● What vendors can and cannot do with the data

● How vendors will respond in the event of a data breach

By enforcing these agreements, SOPPA helps ensure that student data is used only for beneficial purposes.
